Forest Library Cottage
This forest cabin provides a sanctuary perfect for writing, reading, reflection and turning inwards. Its interior walls are lined with shelving for 4,500 books, with a datum enabling a calming double-height ceiling and expansive offset windows to frame views of the sky and forest. On the outside, the building is clad in the same pine that a local pulp mill uses to make paper for books. The monochromatic use of green accentuates the entrance and service elements of the space so that the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom are all verdant, giving a feeling of freshness. The carbon-neutral cottage is entirely off-the-grid and intentionally modest so that books and contemplative living can take centre stage within an affordable budget. The design is completely off-grid.
‘Books, the oldest and the best, stand naturally and rightfully on the shelves of every cottage.’ Henry David Thoreau, Walden
