Native Child Community Space
Native Child Centre: a community space for Indigenous families and children in East Scarborough. This project reimagines the traditional shopping mall: a commercial space is transformed into a community hub, and the environmentally harmful mega parking lot is converted into a thriving, sustainable public garden, complete with children's play spaces and an Indigenous medicine garden. Native Child’s inviting interior space circles around a ceremonial circle skylight. It features an open-concept teaching kitchen, administrative offices, counselling rooms, an Elders' room, fully accessible washroom facilities, engaging child play and education areas, and a welcoming community gathering space for various programs. Scalable and adaptable, the Centre offers a replicable model for reinvigorating outdated and inhospitable urban spaces into inviting places for essential social services, such as classrooms and immigration services.
